Beat the Summer Heat: Why Morning Hydration Is Key For Minnesota Veggie Gardens

Summers in Minnesota are, well, inconsistent. I lived in South Florida (West Palm Beach area) from 2018-2021, and one thing you could depend on was consistent weather - 90°ish F daily, humid & rainy in the afternoons.

But in the 'bold north' we can go from a nice 75° weekend to 100°+ and humid by Monday morning!

If you want your backyard veggies to thrive during a those hot stretches of the Minnesota summer, timing is everything. The best thing you can do for your veggies? Get out there and crank the sprinkler before the sun comes up.

When you water early, the soil has time to soak up every drop, giving your plants a deep, resilient water supply to fuel them through the hottest parts of the day.

Plus, morning watering is your best defense against disease. Watering late in the evening can leave the foliage damp overnight, which is an open invitation for fungal issues like powdery mildew to take over. A watering session around sunrise ensures the midday sun will safely dry off any splashed leaves.
