BEATING Grocery Inflation! The Current ROI of My St. Paul Garden
I've said it before - one of the reasons I garden is to save a few dollars at the grocery store. I figure every dollars worth of veggies I harvest is worth it, both for the fresh produce and the financial savings.
So this week I had a MASSIVE mid-July haul. After dropping the produce onto the scale and crunching the numbers, it added up to around $35 worth of fresh produce in a single day.
Here's a breakdown of the haul:
- 25 oz of sweet carrots
- 15 oz of fresh raspberries
- 2 lbs of crisp greens and lettuce
- A 7 oz zucchini (just shy of a half-pound)
And a steady supply of fresh mint, chives, arugula, and peas to boot.
Total harvest this season? $187.
Let’s look at the actual ROI. My total setup and operational expenses for the year sat just over $300. That means I’m only about $113 away from crossing into the black.
Here's the best part: I haven’t even touched some of the crops!
Tomatoes, cucumbers, and other late-summer crops are still on the vines.
At this current pace, I'll break even around early to mid-August.
