Digging Through the Archives: A Visual Tour of Phalen Plot Through Seasons Past
So I was already working on a new post when I found this video on my cell phone from August 11th, 2023, of me walking through the vegetable garden and giving a little tour that day. Day. Figured I'd share it with everyone this morning!
I usually plant the garden sometime between May 5 and May 14, which is what I’m aiming for again this year.In the meantime, I’ve been digging through old videos and pictures on my phone of the garden, to try and showcase what it’s looked like in years past. In general, my setup consists:
- A few bags of potatoes
- One patch of broccoli
- Two rows of lettuce with a row of arugula in between
- Four rows of carrots
- Two sets of snap peas
- One patch of cucumbers
I've attempted a patch of cantaloupe for several seasons now with minimal success, so I'm planning to swap that out for kale and spinach this year.

Additionally, I have a space near the west end of the garden with containers. I grow tomatoes and zucchini in the containers, plus a variety of herbs that will change from year to year.

We’ve also got this AWESOME raspberry bush. It was already growing alongside the back of the garage when we bought the house, and I’ve never had to tend to it. Just let it grow, let it grow, let it grow!

This is what my plot originally looked like when I dug it out in May of 2022. About 2 weeks after I dug it out, I expanded it a couple feet north of the garage.

I also dug up some old photos from the 2022-2025 growing seasons, below are a few galleries for each year. Enjoy!

My first "big haul" for the summer of 2023. July 3, 2023.

Garden in early June 2022, as well as one of my harvests in August 2022. I stopped trying to grow watermelon after two seasons, even though that one looks big, there really wasn't a lot of fruit inside. Same with the cantaloupe, I'm moving on from that this season, I haven't gotten good yields at all the past 4 years
