Growing Chives in Pots: Tips & Maintenance 101
Spring on St. Paul's East Side can be a rollercoaster, but a few hearty herbs and veggies can withstand the weather. Chives are definitely one of them.
Here's the 101:
- 2-inch rule: Leave at least two inches of green above the soil to ensure the plant can recover.
- Outside-in method is great when you need just a lil' bit of chives. By snipping the older outer leaves on the outside, the younger inner leaves will continue to grow and thrive.
- Haircut time! If the plant starts to look ragged or is getting a little too big, give it a full 'haircut' to stimulate a fresh, uniform flush of growth.
- Purple blossoms should be plucked immediately, deadhead them to keep the flavor fresher.
