Shielding Potatoes from the Weekend Cold in St. Paul!
When the temps get too low, you wanna make sure you're covering up your crops! And yes, this even goes for a cold-weather vegetable like potatoes.
As hearty and strong as potatoes can be, even they can die off if it gets too cold out.
The temperature Friday night into Saturday morning was forecast to hit a low of 29°F, and this evening the low is expected to hit 26°F.
Hence the tarp - it will help shield those potatoes from this weekend's cold snap.
How it works:
Freezing temps turn water in potato cells to ice, bursting the walls and killing new growth. A tarp traps rising heat to create a microclimate, keeping frost off whatever foliage has emerged so far. While the grow bags protect the roots, a cover provides the essential thermal barrier the leaves need to survive the night.
We'll check back in on the potatoes in a few days to see how they fared through the cold temps.
