Hilling Potatoes in Grow Bags: A Guide for St. Paul Gardeners

Happy Friday, y'all! I hilled my russet potatoes today. They've been in their bags since April 12.

Hilling potatoes is a necessity when using grow bags. Hilling really boils down to two things: protection and production.

First, you’re shielding the potatoes from the sun. If light hits them while they’re growing, they’ll turn green and bitter, which makes them inedible.

Second, you’re giving the plant more 'room to run.' By burying the stem, you’re encouraging it to grow extra potatoes higher up, which will help increase your total harvest yield.

If you’re using grow bags like I am, this part is easy—just unroll the fabric sides as you add your soil. Keep em' growing until they run out of room, and voila! You'll have home grown potatoes in no time.
